Freiburg accepts up to 50 refugees from Greece – Freiburg

“We show solidarity because we have space”: The Freiburg municipal council has decided by a large majority to accept people – among other things – from the destroyed Moria camp.

It was the second attempt in this matter; At the end of September, the administration had to cancel the agenda item on the intervention of AfD city councilor Detlef Huber because deadlines had not been met. But now the city councilors, apart from the two AfD members, have agreed to provide help to 50 refugees in need. Among them will be up to 14 young refugees from the former Moria reception center for humanitarian reasons.

140 cities have already agreed to accept refugees, said SPD city councilor Julia Söhne, and spoke of a “failed border and asylum policy”. “I would like to check further capacities,” said Anke Wiedemann for the Greens. “We show solidarity because we have space,” said Simon Sumbert (Jupi).

Michael Moos (One City for All), Bernhard Schätzle (CDU), Sascha Fiek (FDP) and Gerlinde Schrempp (Free Voters) also agreed unreservedly; City Councilor Wolf-Dieter Winkler also for humanitarian reasons, but said that the mass admission of refugees could not be a permanent solution.

Opposing voices from the AfD

The two AfD city councilors voted against this. Detlef Huber spoke of “farce and political fooling around” and emphasized that there was a difference between legal refugees and economic refugees.

Germany wants to bring 408 families and up to 150 unaccompanied minors, Baden-Württemberg will take in around 200 people. Mayor Martin Horn declared in mid-September that Freiburg wanted to take in 50 refugees – the local council has now given permission.
