Free train tickets postponed again until October 5th

The free rail pass will be postponed again until October 5th. This is reported by the cabinet of mobility minister François Bellot (MR). NMBS has requested the postponement for ‘obvious reasons of sanitary safety’.

The decision came after, among other things, a call for postponement by, among others, the coastal mayors, the governor of West Flanders and the NMBS. The coastal municipalities have received many visitors in recent weeks, which led to, among other things temporary bans for day tourists.

The railway company NMBS has requested the postponement ‘for obvious reasons in the field of sanitary safety and so that NMBS can continue to transport its passengers in the safest way, including sanitary facilities’. In the coming days, the company will communicate about the practical side of the application.

The period in which interested parties can apply for the free pass will start before September 1, it sounds. The free train tickets were already announced at the beginning of June, but ran up criticism in difficult negotiations. In July, the free rail pass had already been postponed until September, to avoid crowds in busy places. Initially, any Belgian resident older than 12 years old could have used that pass after August 17.
