MANHATTAN

In New York, you should definitely take the Staten Island ferry at least once. This ferry connects the southern tip of Manhattan to Staten Island, across New York Bay. This twenty-minute crossing will allow you to enjoy breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. Departure every half hour … and it’s free!

The Museum of American Indians

Opposite Battery Park, not far from the Wall Street bull, you can’t miss the imposing Alexander Hamilton US Custom House. National Museum of September 11, 2001

Built on the site where the twin towers of the World Trade Center stood, the National Museum of September 11, 2001 tells the story of the 2001 attacks. Admission is free on Tuesday from 5 pm to closing at 8 pm. Be careful, however: you must book your free tickets in advance on the museum site. The museum imposes a limit of 4 free tickets per family.

Federal Hall National Memorial

In the heart of the Wall Street district, facing the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Hall National Memorial was built on the site of the first United States Capitol. It was here that George Washington took office as the first President of the United States in April 1789. The building houses an exhibition on George Washington and the first steps of the new American nation. And entry is free!

The Federal Reserve Bank

Also in the Wall Street district, the American central bank is responsible for overseeing the monetary policy of the United States and the manufacture of coins and notes. But the Fed also welcomes tourists! Guided tours of the safes and gold reserves are organized free of charge from Monday to Friday. To register, go to Fed website. Museum of Chinese in America

Founded in 1980, the Museum of Chinese in America, nicknamed MOCA, tells the story of Chinese immigrants to the United States. Admission is free on the first Thursday of each month, thanks to the sponsorship of New York City and the Chinese foundation JT Tai & Co.

Rubin Museum of Art

Open since 2004 between Madison Square Park and Greenwich Village, the Rubin Museum of Art is a museum entirely dedicated to Himalayan art, more specifically Tibetan art. Admission is free on the first Monday of the month only for seniors.

Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology

Museum of Modern Art

MoMA New York is one of the most influential and captivating art museums in the world. American Folk Art Museum

General Grant National Memorial

This imposing mausoleum houses the tomb of General Ulysses S. Grant, winner of the Civil War and former President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Brooklyn Botanic Garden

If you want to visit the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for free, you will have to aim for the right time… Admission is free every Friday before noon! Note that entry is also free every weekday in winter, from December to February.

Museum of Moving Image

If you love movies, don’t miss a visit to the Museum of Moving Image in Queens. This museum notably hosts a permanent exhibition dedicated to Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppet Show. And admission is free on Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Queens Botanical Gardens

New York Hall of Science

Located in Flushing Meadows Park, the New York Hall of Science is the New York equivalent of the Cité des Sciences in La Villette, Paris. Admission is free on Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
