Free PS5 upgrade for all editions of Horizon Forbidden West anyway

Owners of the standard and special editions of Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will soon be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free. Sony Interactive Entertainment chief Jim Ryan said on Saturday that Sony has backtracked from its earlier decision not to give the standard versions of the game a free upgrade.

“It is obvious that the versions on offer at the pre-order launch missed the mark,” he said the explanation from Ryan on PlayStation Blog, who further explains how Sony will handle upgrades of first-party titles in the future. From now on, gamers will have to pay $10 if they want to upgrade a new first-party PlayStation game from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.

No distinction is made between digital or physical copies; if you bought a game physically and you have PlayStation 5 Disk Edition at home, you can upgrade for 10 dollars via the PlayStation Store. That process is still free for Horizon Forbidden West. “This applies to the next God of War, Gran Turismo 7 and all other cross-gen titles published by Sony Interactive Entertainment,” said Ryan.

Sony made last week known that not all editions would be possible to play on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Players would need to purchase the $80 Digital Deluxe Edition to play the game on both platforms.

That decision drew a lot of criticism from Sony. Fans uttered on Reddit on Twitter their displeasure and said they did not understand the decision.

Horizon Forbidden West will be released on February 18, 2022 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
