Free Oral Health Program in Mexico City: Preventive and Curative Care Services

The Oral Health Program is carried out in 398 dental units distributed in 178 Health Centers in Mexico City, where preventive and curative care services are provided free of charge.
In 2023, 1,413 oral pathology consultations were attended; Biopsies were taken from 123 patients, of which seven people had malignant lesions.

Within the framework of World Oral Cancer Day that is commemorated on December 5, the Ministry of Health of Mexico City (SEDESA), through the Public Health Services, reports that it has the Oral Health Program in 398 dental units, distributed in 178 Health Centers in Mexico City, where preventive and curative care services are provided free of charge.

“To prevent any type of disease, the ‘Stick out your tongue’ campaign is carried out. Prevents oral cancer’. We focus a lot on preventing and detecting oral cancer, which occurs due to multiple factors: poor diet, smoking, genetic factor, using solvents, constantly consuming alcohol or a poorly fitting prosthesis,” indicated the state head of the Oral Health Program of Mexico City, Luis Antonio Rodríguez Rosas.

He reported that so far in 2023, 1,413 oral pathology consultations have been attended, of which 123 patients were referred for biopsy and of these, only seven people resulted with malignant lesions and 10 with potentially malignant lesions, this means that They must be under control and observation, to avoid the evolution of oral cancer.

With respect to oral health, he indicated that 1,821,473 services have been provided in the 16 health jurisdictions of the city: 248,764 dental consultations, 1,413 oral pathology consultations, 1,282,420 preventive activities and 288 thousand 876 healing activities, until November 24 of this year.

In the dental areas of the Health Centers, brochures are provided to maintain good oral health, whose name is “7 steps to perform a self-examination to detect oral lesions.”

This information calls on people to wash their hands well and stand in front of a mirror to observe and feel both lips inside and out, as well as teeth and gums on all sides, the inside of the cheeks, all the sides of the tongue, pulling the tongue to both sides, the lateral edges, the floor of the mouth (under the tongue) and the roof of the mouth.

The specialist said that people should go to the dentist if they notice any of these signs after having completed the seven steps: red, swollen or sensitive gum; part of the roots of the teeth may be exposed or the teeth may appear longer; the presence of pus between the teeth and gum (when pressure is placed on the gum); bad breath and bad taste in the mouth.

Also that permanent teeth that are lost or separated from each other; white or red spots on the gum; the presence of a lump or bump; and changes in the fit of partial dentures or dentures.

“All patients with lesions are sent to the Institute of Cancerology (INCan), where they determine the treatment to follow according to the classification. Some people, after their treatment, are reviewed every three or six months for two years, according to the treatment they have received,” indicated the specialist.

Finally, SEDESA recommends going to the nearest health center to receive preventive care and the basic oral health prevention scheme, which consists of the following services: detection of dental plaque and adhered film, instruction in brushing technique, instruction in the use of dental floss, prophylaxis (teeth cleaning), hygiene review of dentures, talks on oral health and review of oral tissues.
