Fred Rutten is very close to returning as head coach in the Eredivisie

Sparta Rotterdam relies on the arrival of Fred Rutten as the new head coach, ESPN reports. The Castle Club considers the coach, who has left PSV’s technical staff, as the ideal candidate to succeed Maurice Steijn. Talks between the two parties are already at an advanced stage and an agreement is close.
Rutten has a wealth of experience as head coach, but took a step back last season to become an assistant to Ruud van Nistelrooij at PSV. A few months before the end of the season, Rutten already indicated internally that he wanted to stop in that role, because he wanted to become head coach again. After the sudden resignation of Van Nistelrooij, Rutten finished the season as interim trainer. Rutten was already head coach of PSV between 2009 and 2012 and also represented the player group of FC Twente, Schalke 04, Vitesse and Feyenoord, among others.
Steijn left this summer for Ajax, which put the escape clause in his contract on the table. Since then, Sparta has been looking for a successor to the successful coach, who led the club to a very creditable sixth place in the Eredivisie. Sparta tried it with Danny Blind, who was active as a player at Het Kasteel for seven years. Blind was honored by that, but declined the position because he enjoys the life he currently leads.
“That will change if I say ‘yes’ to Sparta,” said the former defender to Rijnmond. “Then I have to be available 24/7 and – so to speak – put my bed at Het Kasteel. I am still open to a country, with or without Louis van Gaal. Not anymore for a club. I have that Let Sparta know properly.” Sparta also caught the eye of the American Gregg Berhalter and Ron Jans, who left FC Twente.
