Fraudster Elizabeth Holmes tries to escape prison with second child | Abroad

Elizabeth Holmes, the American entrepreneur and founder of the fraudulent blood testing company Theranos, recently gave birth to her second child. Court papers show that the scammer has asked the judge to postpone her prison sentence in order to take care of her child.

Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison late last year for misleading investors about the capabilities of her company’s blood testing technology. Her lawyers have appealed against her conviction. Holmes hopes that due to the birth of her second child, she will not have to go to jail for the time being and will be able to await the appeal procedure, which can take years, in freedom. The hearing on this will take place on March 17.

Although no announcements have been made about the baby’s date of birth and gender, the news of the birth comes as no surprise. Holmes, 38, was already visibly pregnant when she was convicted by a jury of four counts of fraud and conspiracy on Nov. 18 in court in San Jose, California.

Postpone process

The start of that trial was delayed so that Holmes could give birth to her first child, a son. Holmes had both children with her current partner, William “Billy” Evans. She met Evans after her 2016 split with her former lover and business partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, who was sentenced to nearly 13 years in prison in a separate trial.

The 57-year-old Balwani is also trying to postpone his prison sentence and has submitted a request to this effect to the American district judge Edward Davila. A hearing was held earlier this month, but Davila has not yet made a ruling.

Her two children are not the only reason why Holmes wants to await her appeal in freedom. Her lawyers say so many mistakes were made during her trial that they consider it likely that her conviction will be overturned. In addition, during the four and a half years that she had been free on bail since the charge, she would have proven that she is not a flight risk or a danger to the community.
