Frankfurt and Offenbach want to apply as a model region for cannabis sales and the Hessian municipalities are at the limit when it comes to looking after refugees. The FAZ Hauptwache takes a look at the topics of the day.

Good evening,
three weeks of Easter holidays – according to many, that’s at least a week too long. Easter – that was somehow what felt like an eternity ago. And the holiday photos that friends, colleagues and family members send from the farthest corners of the world are slowly getting enough. News knows no holidays. Frankfurt and Offenbach are preparing to apply as a model region when it comes to “legal cannabis tax”, at the rest area in Gräfenhausen the loading area of a truck will become a negotiation room and the state of Hesse will transfer 50 million euros to its municipalities for the month of April for refugee aid. The most important of the day at a glance.

Controlled delivery: Artur Schroers, head of the drug department in Frankfurt, doesn’t like discussions that are conducted in the subjunctive. If people didn’t use cannabis from time to time, politicians wouldn’t have to deal with the issue. But they just do it. And not hypothetically. But often even regularly. The cities of Frankfurt and Offenbach want to apply as a model region, since the federal government is continuing to promote the topic of “controlled supply of cannabis for recreational purposes to adults”. The problem so far: none of those involved really know what conditions a model region actually has to meet. Because the application requirements have not yet been determined. Nevertheless, the declaration of intent should have spread to Berlin. In a model region, companies should be able to produce, sell and sell recreational cannabis in designated specialist shops “in a licensed and state-controlled framework”. The project period is set at five years and will be scientifically monitored, as Schroers explains. The effects of commercial supply chains on health and youth protection as well as the black market are to be examined.

More support required: In April, Hesse transfers a good 50 million euros in federal money to its municipalities for refugee aid. The state is making an advance payment and is complying with the request of many cities and municipalities to pay out the money in advance. An example from Wiesbaden makes it clear that steps like these are urgently needed. More than 9,000 refugees are currently registered there. There are more every day. According to information from the head of the social affairs department, Christoph Manjura (SPD), a new communal accommodation facility in Nordenstadt is to be put into operation as early as July. The opening of another emergency shelter is planned for autumn, it will be the eighth of its kind with more than 250 beds in the city center. In conversation with the FAZ the outgoing head of department predicts that the costs for refugee care will continue to rise. So much so that the city may have to cut offers for children and young people. For the next year alone, Manjura assumes that the social services department will not be able to cover the costs for refugee aid of more than 40 million euros. Of the approximately 9,000 refugees registered in Wiesbaden, around 2,630 people are housed in around 70 communal accommodations in the city.

Tedious negotiations: The truck drivers’ protest continues at the Gräfenhausen service area. Dutch trade unionist Edwin Atema has been appointed spokesman and negotiator by the strikers. He sums up the drivers’ demands in one sentence: “First, they want money, second, money, third, money.” Atema himself is not allowed to negotiate. The Polish employer prefers to do this with each driver individually. They are supported in the talks by Anna Weirich. She works for Fair Mobility, a consulting project of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). “The men are making history here. They stand here not only for themselves, but also for their families and all truck drivers.”, says Weinrich. Unionist Atema calls for an “international supply chain strategy,” as our author Theresa Weiß writes.

And also we asked around how students prefer to live today. The trend is towards single apartments. They now have that too Private investors recognized for themselves +++ has the city of Frankfurt 150 years ago the Fuhramt was foundedto collect the garbage +++ we portray the doctor Christopher Stein – he is a doctor and an actor.
