France: two highways closed for nearly 400 km following the actions of farmers

Two major highways in the south of France were closed Friday morning for nearly 400 km on an axis going from the south of Lyon to Spain, from “never seen“, we learned from the company operating these axes, Vinci Autoroutes. These closures are due to actions carried out by French farmers, mobilized for almost a week to demand new aid measures from the government.

The A7 and A9 are cut between Chanas (Isère) and Sigean (Aude) at the request of the authorities: “We had never seen this, on such a scale and over such a duration.“, a Vinci spokesperson explained to AFP. Several other roads have been blocked by farmers since Friday morning: the A1 motorway, a major axis linking Paris to northern Europe, was closed to the traffic in both directions both north of Paris, near Senlis, and south of Lille, causing significant traffic difficulties. Farmers plan to block the A1 motorway near the Chamant toll in both directions between Paris and Lille.

The Oise prefecture has authorized the closure of the A1 for around forty km until 11:59 p.m. Friday. The Ile-de-France sections of the FNSEA and Young Farmers called on their members to gather on Friday on the main roads around Paris.
