France is allocating 200 million euros to destroy a wine surplus. The French drink less wine, and in recent months this has become even less due to high food prices.

Winegrowers in Europe had a good vintage and saw their harvest increase by 4 percent. Winegrowers are also still dealing with wine surpluses from corona times, because they could not store their bottles in cafes and restaurants at the time.

Wine consumption in France has fallen by as much as 15 percent in recent months due to inflation. Much less wine was also drunk in other European countries; in Portugal, wine consumption even fell by 34 percent.

In recent decades, wine consumption among the French has already fallen sharply. On average, a resident drinks forty liters of wine per year, in the seventies this was still one hundred litres. Beer is also becoming increasingly popular and young people are more likely to drink non-alcoholic drinks. However, wine remains the most popular alcoholic drink.

Alcohol for cleaning products

The French government buys up the overproduction from the farmers. With this, the Minister of Agriculture hopes that wine prices will no longer fall and that winegrowers can keep their heads above water.

The pot contains 160 million in European subsidies. The rest is filled by France itself. The millions will also be spent on vintners who want to focus on other products, such as olives.

How much wine the government will destroy is unknown. The alcohol that is released will then be processed in disinfectants, cleaning products and perfumes.
