How close are the FPÖ and the extreme right-wing identity movement? This question has been in focus since the terrorist attack in New Zealand’s Christchurch, since the alleged assassin and the local identity chief Martin Sellner corresponded. The FPÖ, at that time still in the government, severed its relations with the identities under pressure from the other parties, but its party chairman at the time, Heinz-Christian Strache, flirted with identical slogans such as the “Great Population Exchange”. After the Ibiza video, Norbert Hofer took over the party; he had repeatedly expressed his rejection of extreme right-wing identities.
