Fourteen US residents at Diamond Princess have coronavirus

The United States got three hundred people yesterday from the Diamond Princess. “During the evacuation process, after passengers left the ship and left for the airport, US officials were informed that 14 passengers, who had been tested two to three days earlier, were found to have COVID-19,” the US Department of Foreign Affairs reports .

Appropriate location

The aircraft with the evacuees left Japan yesterday for the US. Upon arrival the Americans have to quarantine again. Passengers who begin to show symptoms along the way and those who test positive are isolated and cared for at an ‘appropriate location’.

Today the Australian authorities announced that they are also repatriating some two hundred citizens of the cruise ship. They will be picked up on Wednesday and must also be in quarantine for 14 days after their return, according to Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

There are thousands of people on the cruise ship since the beginning of February in quarantine. More than 350 of those on board have the corona virus.

Morrison says that in addition to hundreds of Australians, New Zealanders are being taken back on board. They also fly to Darwin, Australia, and are then transferred to their home country.

The prime minister showed understanding for passengers who find it frustrating that they will have to quarantine again soon. “But our main responsibility is to protect the health and safety of Australians.”
