four outbreaks detected, an impending second wave?

CORONAVIRUS. While France recorded 70 deaths in 24 hours, the lowest total since March, several clusters were discovered this weekend causing the vigilance of the health authorities.

The essential

  • New home in Vendée. This weekend, the West of France was affected by the appearance of several clusters. The last area to date, the Vendée. The department came under the supervision of the Regional Health Agency after the discovery of several positive cases in an agrifood company. According to the prefecture and the regional health agency, four employees of a poultry slaughterhouse located in Essarts-en-Bocage – belonging to the company Arrivé, tested positive at Covid-19. A massive screening has been organized and a second series of around 400 samples (staff remaining) should take place on Monday. The ARS also specifies that the work of “contact subjects” has started since this Sunday.
  • A second wave not mastered? It is inevitable for many researchers and in particular because of the deconfinement strategy implemented by the government. Dr. Martin Blachier even qualifies on France Info that “the very strict barrier measures, the 50 pages of protocol sent to companies, the authorization to take the metro” is “pseudo-confinement” and “that at one point, it will let go “. According to a study by Public Health Expertise published online on Wednesday 6 May, “the absence of reinforced protection measures for the most vulnerable people” would cause a second wave. For its part Inserm indicates that to control the latter, “it is necessary that the physical distance is respected, with 50% of the population at home, and that only half of the shops and activities resume”.
  • Several positive tests in a home for young workers in Clamart. An employee contaminated with coronavirus, caused a massive screening of staff and residents. According to the results of analyzes that fell on Friday, seven asymptomatic young people have Covid-19 and an agent. The ARS has already contacted all the persons concerned to begin its investigation and identify the contact cases.
  • Is the cluster in Dordogne under control? The information was released by a press release from the Agence Régionale de Santé Nouvelle-Aquitaine this Saturday. A man with coronavirus attended a funeral in the commune of Église-Neuve-de-Vergt in late April. A total of 127 people from the Portuguese community were screened, and 103 results were received. Nine cases of Covid-19 have so far been confirmed. There is nothing serious, says ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine. “All the people tested to date are asymptomatic,” she says. “We have to be very very vigilant, life is restarting but not as before,” insisted Friday during a press briefing the prefect of the Dordogne Frédéric Périssat. In these last days of containment, the authorities wanted to make an update after the discovery on May 5 of an outbreak of contamination. “This Sunday, May 10, the Regional Health Agency has just published the results of the last tests carried out around the “cluster” of coronavirus detected in Dordogne, and the last 43 tests are all negative, reports France Bleu.
  • A series of SARS-CoV-2 contaminations in a secondary school in Vienna also raises questions. The ARS of Nouvelle-Aquitaine also indicated on Saturday that several staff members of the Gérard-Philipe college in Chauvigny have tested positive for Covid-19 in recent days. Bruno Belin, president of the Departmental Council, gave details this Sunday. The first case was identified on Thursday May 7. The results of tests carried out with the staff of the establishment present to prepare for the start of the school year on May 18 then revealed that 4 staff members were positive. “Two days before the gradual lifting of the containment linked to the health crisis we are going through, two major alerts remind us that we must all be very vigilant”, writes Bruno Belin, who believes that “we are being caught up by the ‘compelling need to maintain extremely cautious behavior’. “I also want to alert all French people, even those living in green departments like Vienne. We are not out of the crisis! It is essential to continue to exercise the greatest vigilance in all moments of daily life”, concluded the chosen.
  • A concern for slaughterhouses? In the United States, the question already arose a few days ago, it is now hitting France with this new identified cluster. In slaughterhouses, the spread of the virus could very quickly be poorly controlled because of the impossibility of respecting social distancing, hellish pace, poorly adjusted masks and often put back in place. The Arrivé company tried to reassure in a press release published Sunday afternoon by indicating that “each production site has implemented the strictest sanitary measures to allow employees to work safely and protect their health.”
  • The latest assessment of the coronavirus epidemic in France still has a high mortality rate with more than 26,000 deaths and another 70 deaths according to the latest assessment on Sunday May 10. This is the weakest record since containment. In hospitals, signs of improvement are accumulating with a further decrease in the number of hospitalized patients (-45) and in intensive care patients (-36). Here are the latest figures to remember:
    • 139,063 cases confirmed by PCR (Ehpad included), or 209 more
    • 73,143 cases in Ehpad (35,046 confirmed), or 293 more
    • 26,380 deaths in total (Ehpad included), or 70 more
    • 16,642 hospital deaths, or 69 more
    • 9,738 deaths in nursing homes, or 1 more
    • 22,569 hospitalizations in progress, or 45 less
    • 2,776 people currently in intensive care, or 36 less
    • 56,217 people discharged from the hospital, or 179 more

NB: the data relating to people hospitalized and in intensive care presented above correspond to the number of patients in the course of care and not to the accumulation since the beginning of the epidemic. In total, 96,038 hospitalizations were recorded. Hospitalizations and additional resuscitation cases in 24 hours correspond to net figures, taking into account cures and deaths. In the last 24 hours, gross, 253 more hospitalizations were recorded and 38 admissions in intensive care.

After fear in Dordogne, in Vienne, it is now in Vendée that fears are felt.
