It is reported that the coronavirus protein, used in nanoparticle form, could enhance their effectiveness when used in a vaccine. This was stated by specialists from the State University of New York at Buffalo. The research was published in the journal Advanced Materials.

Scientists have invented a method that will produce more antibodies to a protein that the virus needs to enter cells. The receptor binding domain (RBD) is found in one of the proteins in the coronavirus spike. It binds to the ACE2 receptor in the body’s cells, after which the virus enters the cell. Professor Jonathan Lovella, who leads the team at the University of Buffalo, said:

“It would be nice if the vaccine could cause high levels of antibodies against RBD. One way to do this is to use the RBD protein itself as an antigen, that is, a vaccine component against which the immune response will be directed.

Lovell also hopes that the results of the study will prove to vaccine developers that the use of RBD in nanoparticle form is most effective in obtaining antigens.
