At least forty percent of all cancers can be prevented by removing a number of risk factors preventively. These include limiting smoking, alcohol and obesity and a lack of physical activity. This is reported by the Foundation against Cancer.

The number of cancers continues to rise in Belgium: there are about 28,000 cases every year. According to the Foundation against Cancer, there is sufficient evidence that prevention can make a real difference. In primary prevention, scientists are investigating how to address the risk factors. These include smoking, alcohol, obesity, lack of exercise, unbalanced diet and exposure to UV rays. Secondary prevention examines how existing screening can be improved or how new forms of screening can be developed for people who are at particular risk (such as screening for lung cancer in smokers).

The Foundation against Cancer decided to support research projects into prevention even more financially. It launched a first call for projects in October 2021 and the results will be announced on Thursday.

From the 16 projects submitted, a national jury of independent experts selected 7 research projects. The Foundation against Cancer is allocating 1,737,152 euros for these projects. These projects must be completed within one to two years. Two projects focus on primary prevention, the other five on secondary prevention.
