Formula E in New York: Sebastien Buemi beats Günther & Wehrlein in 2nd free practice

Sebastien Buemi won the 2nd Formula E free practice session in New York. The Swiss in the Nissan improved the previous lap record in Brooklyn by around three tenths of a second and ended up just ahead of Maximilian Günther in the BMW. Pascal Wehrlein placed his Porsche in third place.

After the shortened first free practice, most of the drivers were in a hurry to collect important track time. Jake Dennis scraped along the wall at the exit of Turn 11 in the early stages. For a brief moment there were also yellow flags in Turn 1. Maximilian Günther (BMW) missed the first eight minutes of the session, but then drove onto the course. In contrast to Sam Bird, whose Jaguar was rebuilt after his accident in FP1.

After a little more than ten minutes, Sergio Sette Camara spun in Turn 10. The Dragon driver was able to turn around without any problems and drive on. At the top of the timesheet at this point: Stoffel Vandoorne in the Mercedes. A little later, however, Lucas di Grassi set the fastest time in attack mode.

Buemi is back in the lead

Around twelve minutes before the end, Jean-Eric Vergne braked himself in turn 6 and had to take the emergency exit. Then Sebastien Buemi turned the first lap in qualifying mode with 250 kW. He took first place with a lead of more than half a second. With this, the Swiss set a new course record at the same time. Alexander Sims had held it before, back then still in the BMW (1: 09.617 minutes). Nick Cassidy, on the other hand, made two spins.

Max Günther “only” made it to second place, but with a minimal gap to Buemi. In the last five minutes, as usual, most of the drivers switched to qualifying mode and improved their times – for example the two Venturi drivers in 3rd and 4th place. Then Wehrlein moved up to 3rd position. The lap of Buemi was a real “board” and should remain the fastest of the session until the end.

The Nissan driver thus reported back to the top of Formula E – at the place where he had won his last race 20 races ago. Günther, Wehrlein, Mortara and Nato completed the top 5. Qualifying on New York Saturday starts at 6:30 p.m. German time – due to technical problems in the web player, this time it can only be seen on ran.de in the live stream. However, we are there for you as usual with our live ticker.
