The corona virus pandemic could delay the start of the Formula 1 season even further. According to “motorsport.com”, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix scheduled for June 7th is shaking tremendously in the streets of Baku. The move is said to be made official on Monday. It would be the eighth race to be put on hold.

Due to the CoV pandemic, the start of the season in Melbourne was canceled at short notice after a coronavirus case at the British racing team McLaren. After that, the Grands Prix in Bahrain and Vietnam had been postponed to an undetermined date. The race in China, which was planned as the fourth round of the World Cup, had already been rescheduled due to the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic in the country.
Last week there were postponements of the race in the Netherlands (May 3) and the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona (May 10). The classic in Monte Carlo (May 24th) was completely canceled. With the cancellation of Monaco, the latest start to the season in the history of the racing series that had been held since 1950 was certain. The last time Formula 1 started the season 54 years ago was in May. Jackie Stewart won the first Grand Prix of the year in Monaco on May 22, 1966. Now, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the premier class has to wait even longer for their first race for the first time.
Season start only in Austria?
The construction work in Baku, where, like in Monte Carlo, is driven on a street circuit, requires a longer lead time than on other racetracks. For the race, the main grandstand and the boxes have to be temporarily erected. Given the current measures against the spread of the corona virus, the organizers in Azerbaijan could pull the ripcord.
If the Grand Prix in Baku, which was originally planned to be the eighth race of the season, was canceled, the race in Canada on June 14 would be the scene of the opening. The French Grand Prix was on the agenda two weeks after Montreal. However, both races also wobble due to the current situation. If the situation does not relax significantly, these two races are also threatened with a cancellation. The next date to start the season would be July 5th. On this day the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg is still on the calendar.
