The racing team will publish the first photos of the new car on Monday, which will be used at the weekend when the season starts late in Spielberg. World champion Hamilton and vice champion Valtteri Bottas will be chasing the first success after the mandatory corona virus break in the almost completely black car with some color accents.
“The Silver Arrows will appear in black throughout the 2020 season to demonstrate our clear commitment to more diversity in our team and our sport,” Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff was quoted in a press release on Monday.
“For respect and equality”
Racism and discrimination “have no place in our society, our sport and our team”, emphasized the 48-year-old from Vienna. “The right beliefs and the right mindset are not enough if we remain silent. We therefore want to use our voice and our global platform to campaign for respect and equality. ”
Mercedes also wanted to take an active part in the fight against discrimination and was therefore launching a diversity and integrity program until the end of the season. These include educational initiatives to encourage and support young people from underrepresented groups who are pursuing a career in Formula 1. “We want to build a legacy together that goes beyond sport,” said Hamilton.
The Briton is the only black driver in Formula 1 and has often faced racism. Most recently, the 35-year-old participated several times in the fight against the grievances.
