Red Bull appeal on DAS Mercedes rejected

The first race of the 2020 season has not yet started, but the Mercedes has already scored a first win. In Austria the Son indeed rejected the appeal filed by Red Bull against the innovative dual axle steering system (DAS), which affects the convergence of the front wheels. On Mercedes, the mobile steering wheel debuted for the first time in the pre-season tests in February and will be banned from 2021. According to Red Bull, the DAS violates some technical rules, in particular related to aerodynamics, and to article 10.2.3, according to which “no adjustments can be made to any suspension system while the car is in motion”. But, after a hearing held by the technical commissioners with the participation of members of both teams (in person or on video), as well as Nikolas Tombazis, from the FIA technical office, it was established that the DAS is part of the steering of Mercedes W11, “although in an unconventional way”. Therefore does not violate the rules related to the suspension and Mercedes can continue to use it. The DAS would allow the tires to go more evenly in temperature on the straights, thus reducing wear and favoring grip, while allowing maximum cornering stability. Rivals could now try to adopt their own version of the system before the season ends. Red Bull team manager Christian Horner has already hinted that his team is thinking about it.
