Former US presidential candidate Bob Dole (98) dies | Abroad

Republican Dole was a senator for his party for many years. In 1996, he unsuccessfully ran for the White House. He lost the battle to Democrat Bill Clinton.

Dole served in the US Army during World War II and fought in Italy, among other places. There he was so wounded that his fellow soldiers left him on the battlefield, assuming he was dead. Due to the injuries he sustained there, he was later unable to use his right arm.

Dole last made headlines in 2016 when he was one of the few longtime Republican Party leaders to express his support for presidential candidate Donald Trump. At the time, at nearly 93 years old, he was the only former presidential candidate to attend the party congress at which Trump was officially nominated.

In February, Dole announced that he was suffering from lung cancer. He died as a result of that illness.
