Former US President Donald Trump denounced the civil case for fraud in his business practices as a politically motivated “fraud”, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
“This is a continuation of the biggest witch hunt of all time,” he said on his way to a New York court where he pleaded guilty. “It’s a scam. It’s a scam,” the Republican insisted, reiterating his position that the lawsuit was a politically motivated attempt to thwart his return to the White House.
The indictment, filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleges that Trump and his company misled banks, insurers and others, mostly by entering false information about his wealth in financial statements.
Judge Arthur Engoren has already ruled that Trump committed fraud in his business dealings, but has yet to rule on six more claims in the case.
The prosecutor is demanding that Trump pay $250 million in fines and be banned from doing business in New York.
If the judge’s ruling last week is upheld on appeal, Trump would be forced to give up properties in New York, including the Trump Tower office building on Wall Street, golf courses and a suburban mansion.
