Former Ukrainian National Team Player Oleg Shelaev Discusses Euro 2024 Qualifying Playoff Round Call-Up List by Coach Sergei Rebrov

Former player of the Ukrainian national team Oleg Shelaev shared his thoughts on the list of players whom national team coach Sergei Rebrov called up for the matches of the Euro 2024 qualifying playoff round.

— First of all, it should be noted that this is the choice of the head coach, who is responsible for the result. Although, perhaps, there will be specialists who will have questions about some positions. For me, this list was expected. After all, it had long been obvious that due to injury Taras Stepanenko would not be able to help, that he would have to look for a replacement. Another thing is Viktor Tsygankov, who injured his knee in the last round of the Spanish championship in the match between Girona and Osasuna. His absence will affect the attacking potential of the country’s main team; he interacted well with his teammate Artem Dovbyk.

However, I don’t think that the losses of Stepanenko and Tsygankov will be decisive, although they will add headaches to Sergei Rebrov. I am convinced that the mentor will choose performers who will minimize the absence of injuries. Much will depend on what tactical schemes will be adopted; this will determine who will play on the right flank of midfield: Alexander Zubkov or Alexander Karavaev, and in the defensive position – Sergei Sidorchuk or Vladimir Brazhko. After all, there are other options.

In my opinion, the Ukrainians are still the favorites in the confrontation with the Balkans, they just need to demonstrate their best qualities,” Shelaev said.

The match Bosnia and Herzegovina – Ukraine will take place in Zenica on March 21.
