On Wednesday, the media reported a video clip of the killing of the former supreme representative of the Iranian guide, Ali Khamenei, and a member of the Iranian Assembly of Experts responsible for appointing the guide, Ayatollah Abbas Ali Soleimani.

The Iranian semi-official Tasnim news agency published a video clip of the killing, in which a gunman appeared to move slightly before heading directly towards Soleimani and shooting him from behind from zero distance.

Iranian media reported that Soleimani was in a bank in Babolsar, a town on the Caspian Sea, 230 km north of Tehran.

The authorities arrested the shooter, whose video showed his departure after an attempt by people present at the scene of the attack to stop him.

It is noteworthy that Soleimani held the position of representative of Ali Khamenei and the imam of Friday prayers in Kashan, a city in the center of the country between Tehran and Isfahan, and in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, a region in the southeast that includes Sunni Muslims.

Khamenei’s representatives are clerics who act on his behalf at the provincial level, according to Reuters.

Abbas Ali Soleimani was one of the 88 members of the Assembly of Experts responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader, the highest authority in the country, according to AFP.

The Council of Experts, of which he was a member, is a body composed of 88 clerics who are elected for a period of 8 years by direct universal suffrage from a group of candidates approved by the Guardian Council. It is responsible for appointing the Supreme Leader and supervising his work, and he has the constitutional right to dismiss him and appoint a new person if he deems it necessary. .

An attack in April 2022, carried out by suspected militants in the holy city of Mashhad (northeast), killed two Shiite clerics, according to AFP.
