Former RIVM director for national duty to mask masks, denounces ‘no-obligation policy’

The Dutch government’s corona policy is too informal and inconsistent. Roel Coutinho, microbiologist and former director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control of the RIVM, is this harsh judgment about the Dutch response to the virus outbreak.

“It’s a lot of: we all have to do it together and that makes it very noncommittal. I think that is a risk,” says Coutinho in News hour. He thinks Prime Minister Mark Rutte sketches the problem well, but also thinks that he places too much responsibility on the population.

Coutinho argues for the government to set a standard. He believes that there should be a national duty to mask masks in shops, restaurants and contact professions. “It’s really not that complicated and not that bad either.”

‘It probably won’t work’

Mayors have been given the opportunity by the cabinet to use masks in certain places where it is busy. Face masks are currently mandatory in certain shopping streets and on markets in Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

According to Coutinho, such rules are ambiguous and very confusing for people. “Then you walk in the Kalverstraat and then you have to and a little further you don’t. That is not clear at all, is it? Then people think: it will not work.”

People also see that mouth masks are mandatory in many more places abroad. “It has to be on holiday in Italy and France and it is no longer necessary at home. That is not good. The Netherlands should not think that we can take a different position on this.”

There is also no scientific evidence for the 1.5 meters and yet we all do it.

Prime Minister Rutte said in the press conference yesterday that mouth masks are hardly effective. According to the microbiologist, the RIVM is also looking for irrefutable evidence before choosing certain measures.

According to Couthinho, in a pandemic, the so-called precautionary principle must be acted upon, not evidence. “There is no scientific evidence for many things. Not keeping a distance of 1.5 meters, and yet we all do it. You just have to dare to take those measures.”
