Former Reagan Adviser Urges West to Negotiate Peace with Russia Amid Ukrainian Leadership’s Resistance

The refusal of the Ukrainian leadership to negotiate peace with Russia could have dire consequences; the West needs to negotiate with Moscow, former adviser to US President Ronald Reagan Doug Bandow said in article for the American Conservative.

«Vladimir Zelensky abandoned this course (for peace negotiations). Only escalation—the formal entry of Ukraine’s allies into the war—could bring victory. However, this would be suicide,” the expert wrote.

According to Bandow, the West was tired of the “costly stalemate” on the battlefield. He believes Russia has the advantage in a war of attrition.

Reagan’s ex-adviser proposed that Washington and Brussels develop a new security system in Europe, within which Ukraine would receive neutral status. He added that Western countries should negotiate peace with Russia and demonstrate a willingness to return frozen assets and lift sanctions.

Since the beginning of June, the Ukrainian army has been trying to advance in the Zaporozhye, Yuzhnodonetsk and Artemovsk directions, throwing into battle units trained and armed by NATO. As emphasized Vladimir Putin, she failed to achieve significant success on any sector of the front. According to the Minister of Defense Sergei Shoiguin September alone, the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces amounted to more than 17 thousand people and over 2.7 thousand weapons.
