Former NATO Chief Suggests NATO Membership for Non-Occupied Areas of Ukraine

Former NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen suggested in November that a solution to the Ukraine war could be to grant NATO membership to the non-occupied areas of Ukraine, while the occupied areas remain outside.

In a larger interview with the German newspaper Time Finland’s president, Sauli Niinistö, is clear that it is not the solution.

– It will create a new border inside Ukraine, and I find it difficult to see that in any way being a solution. What if the war continues? Then we will have a third world war. If the war does not continue, there will be a permanent border. I don’t think the Ukrainians would accept such an arrangement in the future, he says to the German newspaper.

Niinistö has been president of Finland since 2011.

Think China is important

Rather, Niinistö envisions that a solution to the conflict will depend on China, as he believes that China’s role in the war is important.

China considers Europe important, at least economically. If Europeans understand that China supports Russia, China’s image would change among citizens who buy so many Chinese goods.

Niinistö tells about a meeting with Zelenskyj earlier this year.

– Then Zelenskyj emphasized that he was ready to talk to China. China should be included when we plan what final security guarantees Ukraine can get. Because if China is involved in such a solution, they must also hold their Russian friends responsible, says the Finnish president.

Bad news for Ukraine

The Republicans in the US Senate stopped the proposal for emergency aid to Ukraine on Wednesday.

– This is dramatic. If this persists, there could be serious consequences for the further warfare in Ukraine, says Lieutenant-Colonel Palle Ydstebø to ABC Nyheter.

Russia, they are probably celebrating this.

He emphasizes that Russia will not necessarily win the war immediately, or that Ukraine will come on its heels immediately, but it will be harder for Ukraine to resist the Russian attacks.
