Former Lithuanian President Dalia Grībauskaitė Urged to Re-Candidate in Presidential Elections: Online Petition Gains 8,000 Signatures

In Lithuania, signatures are being collected online for a petition in which the former president of the country, Dalia Grībauskaite, is invited to re-candidate for the country’s highest office.

By Tuesday morning, more than 8,000 people have signed the petition on the “Peticijos.lt” website.

The petition “Invitation to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė to run in the presidential elections” states that Lithuania is experiencing difficult and dangerous times, when great concentration, willpower and determination are needed. The authors of the petition insist that it is Grybauskaitė that has such qualities.

We believe you. Our country needs you. We need you. you are our president

read in the petition.

Grībauskaite herself previously announced that she does not plan to run again in the Lithuanian presidential elections. This was reiterated in her office on Monday.

“The president has already expressed her position on not participating in the elections,” Grībauskaite commented in writing in her office.

Only eight months until the next presidential election, which is expected in Lithuania in May, it is publicly known about one candidate – the Union of Farmers and Greens has nominated the former health minister Aurelias Verigas for the position of president.

Public opinion polls show that the current head of state Gitan Nausėdas has the best chance of winning the 2024 presidential election, however, he has not confirmed whether he plans to run for re-election.

“As the president has said several times before, he plans to decide on his candidacy in the 2024 elections at the end of this year,” Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT was informed at the Nausėda office on Monday.

The Lithuanian constitution allows the president to hold two consecutive five-year terms of office. Re-candidacy is not prohibited. In Lithuania, the people elect the president.

Grībauskaite, who is now 67 years old, was the president of Lithuania from 2009 to 2019.
