Former senior KPK investigator, Baswedan Novels, criticized the decision of the KPK Supervisory Board (Dewas) which only gave sanctions to apologize to perpetrators of illegal levies or extortion from KPK detention centers. Novel believes that Dewas has made fun of the face of the KPK as an anti-corruption institution.
“Dewas and the KPK leadership are making fun of the KPK by giving apologetic sanctions to people who commit corruption,” said Novel when contacted, Friday (16/2/2024).
Novel said that the ethical verdict from the KPK Council would only make public trust in the KPK decrease further. The public, said Novel, could judge that the KPK Council was not serious in imposing sanctions on KPK employees who were involved in ethical violations.
“With permissive sanctions like that, people will be angry with the KPK and increase public distrust of the KPK,” said Novel.
According to the novel, KPK must carry out a comprehensive evaluation in preventing the practice of extortion in the KPK Detention Center. He said the evaluation could also start by replacing members of the KPK Dewas who were permissive regarding acts of corruption involving internal KPK.
“Supervision at the KPK must be improved, starting with replacing the members of the KPK Dewas who have been permissive towards corrupt acts at the KPK. The KPK Inspectorate must be able to map potential irregularities within the KPK and then strengthen areas that are prone to irregularities or corruption,” Novel explained.
Furthermore, Novel also urged that the Corruption Eradication Committee be given strict sanctions in investigating the practice of extortion in detention centers. He asked the KPK leadership not to be lenient in imposing punishments on employees involved in extortion.
“Moreover, the KPK leadership must be an example and not compromise with any acts of corruption within the KPK. There are severe sanctions for any irregularities or corruption within the KPK,” he said.
“So the key is that there is a will from the Corruption Eradication Commission itself, especially its leadership, and not to compromise or be permissive towards any acts of corruption,” continued Novel.
Dewas Sanctions Apologizes for 78 KPK Employees Involved in Detention Extortion
The KPK Supervisory Board (Dewas) gave heavy ethical sanctions to 78 of the 90 people who were tried regarding illegal levies or extortion at the KPK Detention Center today. The KPK Council also explained why the 78 people were only given heavy sanctions in the form of a public apology.
“I also need to explain, since KPK employees changed to ASN on June 1 2021, the ethical sanctions for employees are only in the form of moral sanctions. In this case, an apology. The hardest thing is to apologize openly and directly,” said Chairman of the KPK Council, Tumpak Hatorangan. Panggabean at a press conference at the ACLC KPK building, Thursday (15/2).
Tumpak emphasized that since KPK employees became ASN, punishment was only in the form of moral sanctions. This is because the maximum sanction for ASN is only a moral sanction.
“That, after changing to ASN, our punishment cannot be other than a punishment called a moral sanction. Because, ethical sanctions on ASN are moral sanctions,” he said.
The Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) also investigated criminal extortion cases. The case has risen to the current level of investigation. The perpetrators were also processed according to personnel regulations at the KPK Inspectorate.
