Former IPS Officer Jailed for Contempt of Court Plea Filed by MS Dhoni: Madras High Court Sentences G Sampath Kumar to 15 Days in Jail

Ex-IPS officer jailed for contempt of court plea filed by former Indian cricket team captain MS Dhoni. The Madras High Court on Friday sentenced IPS officer G Sampath Kumar to 15 days in jail. The petition was heard by a bench comprising Justices SS Sundar and Sundar Mohan. But Sampath Kumar has been given 30 days to appeal. The court informed that until then the punishment proceedings of the officer have been cancelled.

Dhoni filed the defamation case after allegations of corruption were leveled against him in the IPL betting case. In 2014, Dhoni filed a defamation case against Sampath Kumar, who was handling the case and against a TV channel, seeking compensation of Rs 100 crore.

Dhoni later filed a contempt of court petition against the official for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court. Sampath Kumar conducted the initial investigation in the 2013 IPL betting case. But later he was suspended from the case after he was accused of taking bribe from some bookies. However, the trial court acquitted him in 2019 citing insufficient evidence. He also argued in the court that the case against him was fabricated to prevent the corruption from being exposed.
