Former Health Minister François Braun Reflects on Governmental Adventure and Plans for the Future

His governmental adventure ended on Thursday, during the reshuffle driven by Élisabeth Borne and Emmanuel Macron. This Friday, July 21, It is with great emotion that the members of the Ministry of Health attended the transfer of power between François Braun and Aurélien Rousseau, a senior official specializing in health policy. After the applause, François Braun, former head of emergencies at the Metz-Thionville regional hospital center took to the road, direction Metz. On the way, he reserved his first reaction (the only given this Friday) to our Lorraine readers.

What state of mind are you in?

” It is complicated. I am proud of the work accomplished. Somehow, I’m also a little relieved. Being a minister is a very intense life. I’m also a little disappointed not to continue. But I will see the benefits of everything we have done. I say “we” because it really is a team effort. When I turn around, there is a sense of pride. We have clearly mapped out the things that will make it possible to reform the health care system. I know that Aurélien Rousseau has the shoulders to continue, he knows our ecosystem and the challenges ahead. »

How do you view this new government, which no longer leaves room for civil society?

“I refer you to my speech. I will not make political comments. But I can say again that I had no brakes in my work. I could do whatever I wanted. (In his speech, delivered this Friday morning, François Braun said: “I am a member of civil society. It is not a shameful disease, and I claim it loud and clear. If the political world is sometimes described as harsh – quite relative harshness when you compare it to the life, suffering, death that caregivers face daily – let us be careful that this world does not become blind to reality. I think I have worked to avoid, or at least limit, this blindness, and I will continue, in my modest scale, to do so.”)

The redesign was expected. Did you feel in the hot seat?

“When you are a minister, you can expect this every day. I worked until the last moment, I stayed on my line of conduct without letting myself be disturbed by anything that might be said. I only listened to the Prime Minister and the President, not the noise. The subject was important enough. »

You also said that you were still wondering what prompted a provincial emergency physician to embark on this adventure. Is it a form of regret?

“Yes, I always wonder about the reasons. It was the meeting with Emmanuel Macron, a man of true conviction that convinced me. It was not a path paved with roses, but neither was it a journey through hell. »

Do you plan to return to Mercy’s ER?

“I’m going to take a little vacation already. In one year, I must not have had ten days off. I need to breathe now that I am relieved of the burden, to also take advantage of my family who in a certain way suffered my choice. Barely a few hours after the handover, I have not decided anything but I do not rule out returning to the hospital. I received a lot of messages that I haven’t had time to answer yet. The holidays will allow it. »
