Former Head of Progressive Socialist Party Warns Against War in Lebanon and Urges Restraint

The former head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, indicated, “I do not favor war and I hope that we will not be lured into war because then nothing will remain of Lebanon, and the military performance so far has not deviated from the rules, but it may.”

Jumblatt pointed out, in an interview with LBCI, that “I hope for local accounts and for my keenness not to involve Lebanon that we do not enter into the war and the decision to displace the Palestinians is an old Zionist Jew before there is a deterrent from Hezbollah.”

He considered that “until now, the military rhythm south is within the borders and is deliberate, but when the war begins, no one knows how to control it, and the fleets did not come to the Mediterranean for a leisurely trip. They are offensive fleets that will participate if the southern front ignites.”

He addressed the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, saying, “I hope that Lebanon will not slide into war out of concern for Lebanon and the people of the south. He is aware of this suffering, I believe, and what is required is restraint.”

He believed, “If the war stops today, this will be a scandal for the Israeli army, and it may be impossible to return to the two-state solution unless the West stops providing aid to Israel,” adding, “The war may last for two or three months or more, if it ends.”

He added, “I do not see peace, and if the Arab world does not take precautions, the stages of trying to liquidate the Palestinian issue have begun. The defensive strategy and the exclusivity of weapons in the hands of the state will remain our slogans, and I have not abandoned them, but part of this decision may be Lebanese and another part may be Iranian.”

In the presidential file, he stressed that “what is required is to fulfill the mandate of the presidency of the republic, form a government, end cases of agency in institutions, and then reform the economy.”

Jumblatt continued, “It seems that Hezbollah agrees with the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Gebran Bassil, not to extend the term of the army commander, and after Bassil moved away from Hezbollah, the latter wants to bring him back, so we are back to the game of blackmail, and Hezbollah and Bassil are cornered. The party wants a Christian ally.” .

He pointed out that “Bassil visited me and expressed his fear for Lebanon, so we proposed Joseph Aoun to lead the army, but the answer was “he came with no inclination” from Wafiq Safa, who said, “We do not want to corner Basil.” He stressed that “at the present time we must forget Azour and the head of the movement.” Marada Suleiman Franjieh, “Is there anyone left but me?” This is absurd and unreasonable.
