Former English international Hunter (76) died of COVID-19 | NOW

Former English international Norman Hunter died on Friday from the consequences of the corona virus. Leeds United’s club icon turned 76.

Hunter played 28 caps for England and made two hits. He was part of the selection at the 1966 World Cup won by England in his own country, but did not receive any playing minutes at that tournament.

The central defender played 540 league games for Leeds United, capturing two league titles. He also played for Bristol City and Barnsley. Later he was a manager at Barnsley, Rotherham United and Bradford City.

In the 1973/1974 season, Hunter was voted best player in the English league by the Players’ Union. It was the first time that the award was presented.

Hunter leaves big hole at Leeds United

Hunter had been in critical condition for several days before he died on Friday. “Despite the good help from the caregivers, Norman lost his battle this morning,” said Championship-leader Leeds.

“He leaves a big gap in the Leeds United family. We will never forget him and think of his family during this difficult period.”
