Blizzard Entertainment was one of those hit by mass layoffs across Microsoft’s gaming divisions last week. While Microsoft promised severance packages to all affected employees, former product chief Adam Holysky decided to sweeten the bad news by cashing in World of Warcraft subscription codes in exchange for 10 years of free game time.
“As soon as I realized what was happening and that I was going to be fired, I immediately went into my keychain and used all my remaining annual subscription codes.”
He can now enjoy the MMORPG for free until October 14, 2033, saving just over $1,500. However, he will still have to pay for future expansions and cash store items.
Holisky was quick to point out that what he did was compliant, as subscription codes are part of the perks of working at Blizzard. He just didn’t have time to use them. However, another former Blizzard employee also tried to use his codes, but ended up breaking the system.
Perhaps Blizzard decided it wasn’t going to lose what could be hundreds of thousands of dollars in subscriptions if everyone followed Holyski’s lead, or maybe the system simply couldn’t handle the strain. Regardless, free play time is a small compensation for the jobs lost and lives ruined by massive layoffs.
