Former Apple employee sentenced to 3 years in prison and ordered to pay $19.27 million in fraud case

Dhirendra Prasad, a former Apple employee, has been condemned by justice in the United States to three years in prison, as well as 19.27 million dollars. This concerns a scam that has been going on for several years.

Jail for a former Apple employee

Dhirendra Prasad was an Apple employee between December 2008 and December 2018. For most of that time, he was a buyer in Apple’s global supply chain. His job as a buyer was to facilitate the process by which Apple purchased parts to perform warranty repairs on older devices. He took advantage of his position and conspired with two separate Apple vendors to defraud his employer by taking bribes, stealing parts, inflating bills and tricking Apple into paying for items and services that the company never received — resulting in a loss of more than $17 million for Apple. As well as engaging in two separate criminal conspiracies with suppliers, Dhirendra Prasad also admitted that he evaded tax on the proceeds of his schemes.

According to court data, the ex-employee had a lot of leeway to make autonomous decisions for the benefit of Apple. He betrayed that trust and abused his power to enrich himself at the expense of his employer, while accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation from the iPhone maker in the form of salaries and bonuses. Furthermore, Dhirendra Prasad used his insider information regarding the company’s fraud detection techniques to design his criminal schemes to avoid detection.

Upon arrival, he has to pay more than $19 million, with more than $17 million of that to Apple and the rest to the IRS (the United States federal government agency that collects income tax and taxes). miscellaneous taxes, and enforces tax laws pertaining to the United States federal budget).
