Forecast: Salvini threatens defeat in regional election in Italy

(AP) The head of the right-wing Lega, Matteo Salvini, could predict a defeat in the regional election in Emilia-Romagna in Italy. Socialist center-left candidate Stefano Bonaccini, according to the Rai broadcaster, received between 47 and 51 percent of the vote on Sunday. The Lega candidate Lucia Borgonzoni came to 44 to 48 percent.

The election in the region is seen as particularly important for the five-star movement and social democratic government in Rome, as it has always been in the left hand. A loss to the Lega would be a big blow.

At the same time, elections were held in Calabria, where, according to forecasts, the center-right candidate of the Forza Italia party, Jole Santelli, prevailed.

Emilia-Romagna

awy. Emilia-Romagna has almost 4.5 million inhabitants, a quarter of whom live in the Bologna agglomeration. The region is one of Italy’s economic drivers. Parma ham and cheese are well-known specialties, including Barilla pasta, as well as Ferrari and Lamborghini. The region takes its name from Via Emilia, which in ancient times linked Piacenza and Rimini, and beyond Milan and Ancona.
