Factual data notes that more than 60 percent of existing diseases are always related to air pollution. Meanwhile, the most dominant source of air pollution in the community is pollution from motorized vehicle transportation. Therefore, the use of good quality fuel oil (BBM) is needed to minimize the impact of air pollution on public health. “On the other hand, the use of BBM with low RON, such as 88 and 90, needs to be avoided because it has a bad impact on health,” said Environmental Health Expert from the University of Indonesia (UI), Professor Budi Haryanto, Tuesday 8/9).

According to Budi, RON 88 and 90 fuels are still equivalent to Euro-2 fuels, whose sulfur content is still above 500 ppm. Not only does it contain SO2, fuel with low RON also contains hydrocarbons whose impact on health is no less bad than SO2. “It is time for Indonesia to use BBM by referring to the Euro-4 standard which has a sulfur content of only 50 ppm. For low RON fuel, it is best not to sell it again because it contributes a lot to diseases that cause high cormobidity. Especially during the COVID19 pandemic like today, “said Budi.

Budi explained, health problems due to air pollution cause acute illness, namely upper respiratory tract infection (ISPA). In addition, air pollution also has the potential to trigger various chronic diseases, such as impaired lung / airway function, COPD, heart disorders / diseases, hypertension, diabetes to kidney disorders. “This chronic disease contributes to a decrease in the body’s immune system and becomes a co-morbidity of COVID19,” said Budi.

According to Budi, the World Health Organization (WHO) has appealed to every country with a high level of pollution, such as Indonesia, to consider risk factors for air pollution and their relation to controlling the COVID19 virus. For the health of all Indonesian people, Budi also suggested that the government begin to switch to using fuel with good quality, at least RON 92 or even 98. “The better the quality of the fuel used, the healthier the community, because diseases related to air pollution will decrease. . Indeed, fuel with low RON is cheaper, but the risk to health is high, so medical costs are also expensive, “said Budi. Author / Editor: Taufan Sukma
