For August new date of the primaries in Puerto Rico

Between August 2 and 9 These are the new dates for the political parties that will hold the primaries for various candidacies, including the governorship.

And it is that before the emergency of Covid-19 coronavirus, the curfew paralyzed part of the work, so a new date and voting method are being sought.

The president of the Democratic People’s Party (PPD), Aníbal José Torres, stated that “in the Popular Party, we understand that there must be a postponement, we have already communicated it to the PNP president (New Progressive Party) and we understand that the ideal date should be August 2. ”

“I have been talking about it (with the PNP president) and we agreed that we were both going to be discussing it with the leadership of the community,” he noted, noting that he consulted with the candidates and the Governing Board and the PPD agree that let that be the date.

The president of the State Election CommissionJuan Ernesto Dávila Rivera, exposed in an interview with Meter, that the primaries should be postponed beyond the established date of June 7.

“With the work stoppage in the EEC following the executive order, it is not possible to hold the primaries on June 7. There are several processes that have stopped and several pending issues have to be held, such as the rectification of the endorsements of applicants, “said the president of the EEC, stressing that the dates would be selected by the electoral commissioners together with the presidents of the parties.

For his part, the spokesman for the Majority of the PNP in the SenateCarmelo Ríos stressed that “they are reaching consensus, the real consensus is that it will not be in June. The dates discussed are in August, between 2 or 9 ”.

The concern is, according to Ríos, guaranteeing the participation and security of the voters, which is why options for electronic voting, early vote or by mail.

He projected that electronic voting will not be ready and postal voting will have opposition, so one of the options is early voting to divide it between Saturday and Sunday.

He stressed that one of the proposals that would be evaluated is by Pedro Pierluisi, a pre-candidate for governor by the PNP, in which people aged 60 or over vote on Saturday and 60 or under on Sunday.
