Football Manager Developer Disagrees with Sony’s Criticisms of Xbox Game Pass

Sony and Microsoft have taken different positions in building their gaming portfolios, and the biggest difference lies in their approaches to subscriptions. While PlayStation Plus is a complementary service to Sony’s flagship offerings, Xbox Game Pass plays a key role in Microsoft’s strategy.

The difference in approach between the two companies became very clear recently, when PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan called Game Pass “value-destroying” during the litigation between Microsoft and the FTC and said publishers were “unanimously negative” about the service. However, it seems that Ryan glossed over his statement a bit…

One of the developers who consistently support Game Pass but disagree with these statements is Sports Interactive, a studio known for Football Manager. In a recent interview with Eurogamer Studio head Miles Jacobson mentioned this situation and said that Sports Interactive wouldn’t enter into a deal with Game Pass if it wasn’t profitable from a business point of view:

“We run quite a strict regime and I want our studio to be profitable – Sega took a big risk with us all those years ago and shareholders should be rewarded for that – strange as that may sound. So we’re not leaning to do business that is bad for any part of the company.” That’s”We run a pretty tight line and I want our studio to be profitable – Sega took a big risk with us all those years ago and their shareholders – strange as it may sound – should be rewarded for it. We so don’t tend to do business that is bad for any part of the company.”

Jacobson further explained that Football Manager’s success on Game Pass has allowed Sports Interactive to grow the franchise in other ways, attracting new players and helping the studio better control the demands of the live service:

“Indeed, Game Pass and Apple Arcade have brought new players to our franchise who have not played our game before. I am confident in the quality of our games and believe we will be able to retain these players for a long time , regardless of the platforms we work on. It makes sense from a financial point of view. It also makes sense from a creative point of view.”

Football Manager has been available through Game Pass for a number of years, and it’s likely that trend will continue this year. Although specific details have not yet been confirmed, Football Manager 2024 is expected to release in November.
