Football (Coupe de France, 8th final): Before Bergerac / Saint-Etienne: Ready to fall a legend to write it themselves? – ARL

January 27, 2022

It is a legend of French football from the 70s, the Association Sportive de St Etienne, who will come this Sunday, January 30 to challenge the irreducible Bergeracois in the country of Cyrano, in a decentralized meeting in Périgueux, with a gauge which will finally approach 4000 spectators, after the authorization of 500 additional places granted this Thursday afternoon by the prefecture of Dordogne to the BPFC. Last in the L1 standings but relaunched in the race to maintain by their victory at Angers in a late match this Wednesday (1-0), and more solid defensively than at the beginning of December, will the Greens be the next victim of the current undefeated leader of the National 2 championship, who has not conceded to date… any goal since entering the Coupe de France, i.e. 7 consecutive games (record for a club of this level)? A qualification in the quarter-finals would be a first in the history of the club, which would enter the legend of Aquitaine amateur football. Before them in our region, only one club of the same hierarchical level (CFA, i.e. the 4th division at the time) reached this stage of the event, FC Libourne St Seurin of Jean-Marc Furlan against SC Bastia (L1 ) on March 9, 2002 at the Chaban-Delmas stadium in Bordeaux. It was Tony Vairelles, during extra time, who scored the only goal of the match for the Corsicans, beaten in the final by Lorient (1-0) on a goal from Darcheville. The challenge will therefore be daunting, but impossible is not Bergerac.

Only one 4th division club has reached the final of the Coupe de France, Calais Racing Union FC of Ladislas Lozano, beaten in 2000 at the Parc des Princes by FC Nantes (2-1) thanks to a contentious penalty from Caveglia at the end of game. Aquitaine fans remember that in the round of 16, the CRUFC had eliminated Langon-Castets (3-0), then… the Girondins de Bordeaux (3-1 AP) in the semi-finals in Lens.
