The country is the world’s largest producer of palm oil. Indonesia’s President Widodo said in a video speech that it was necessary to have enough affordable cooking oil in one’s own country.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world. It is used for cooking, but also industrially in the processing of many foods and cosmetics. So far, more than half of global demand comes from Indonesia.

Several countries have criticized the planned export stop. The price of soybean oil rose to a record high following the announcement on the Chicago Stock Exchange.
