TOKYO – Nikon rumored to be discontinuing DSLR camera development to focus on the mirrorless market. This was revealed by an anonymous source close to the company.

As reported by TechSpot, Friday (15/7/2022), Nikon is reportedly preparing to withdraw from the DSLR camera market to focus on developing smaller and lighter mirrorless models.

An anonymous source familiar with this matter said that this decision was taken because Nikon is increasingly losing consumers due to exposure to smartphone cameras that are getting crazier.

Nikon hopes to beat the dominance of smartphone cameras with mirrorless cameras featuring more sophisticated digital technology.

If you look at the current situation, Nikon hasn’t released a new DSLR model since the D6 arrived in early 2020 and stopped making compact digital cameras a few years earlier.

Meanwhile, smartphone cameras continue to increase every year. Nikon seems to still be producing and distributing existing DSLR models.

Nikon does not seem to be developing a new model. But keep in mind, this is still just speculation. Nikon itself has not yet given an official statement regarding the termination of its DSLR camera development.

While its competitors, Canon, has previously announced that it was leaving the flagship DSLR business since late last year.
