FNV: 80 percent on-call workers see income fall due to corona crisis | NOW

More than 80 percent of the on-call workers are on the street or have fallen sharply in hours as a result of the corona crisis. In addition, nearly 30 percent of temporary workers lost their jobs during the crisis. This is evident from Wednesday a survey by FNV among a thousand flex workers and figures from the UWV.

On-call workers are only paid for the hours they work, but due to the corona crisis, the economy was hit hard and employers had less work. As a result, almost 80 percent of employees with a zero-hour contract no longer have a job. This is problematic, because about half of flex workers have no safety net if work and income are lost, the survey shows.

According to FNV, temporary workers are also very vulnerable. In the first 78 weeks with a new employer, they have no job and income security and may lose their job in the short term. Eighty percent of the temporary workers are in that first phase and 30 percent of them have actually lost their work in recent months.

According to the FNV, the Netherlands has almost 800,000 flex workers who have virtually no security during a crisis and can lose their jobs at any time. For example, they are in the first phase of agency work, their contract will soon expire or they are still in their probationary period.
