Flu shot shortage – GPs appeal to healthy people over 60

Due to a lack of flu shot, various GPs are calling on healthy 60 to 69-year-olds not to accept the invitation for this injection day. In this way they can give priority to patients with a medical condition and people over 70.

More demand than stock

There seems to be more demand for flu shots from GPs than there is stock. That is why State Secretary Blokhuis, after advice from the RIVM, has decided to ask healthy people aged 60 to 69 not to accept the invitation for the flu shot. In this way, at least the most vulnerable people can receive a vaccine, ” says the RIVM.

” People with a medical condition (diabetes, a heart, lung or kidney disease or a reduced resistance) and people 70 years and older are more at risk when they get the flu. Once this group is vaccinated, leftover vaccines can be used for healthy people aged 60 to 69 years. At the end of the flu shot period in December, it will become clear whether there are any vaccines left. ”

There is an increased demand for flu shots nationally and internationally. Prior to the flu vaccination campaign, the RIVM did purchase a maximum number of additional vaccines. As a result, more than half a million extra vaccines are available this year. Flu shots take about 6 months to take, so no new flu shots can be taken for this flu season.

What can you do yourself?

The measures we take together against corona also help to prevent flu and not infect others.

You reduce the risk of influenza by:
• Keep 1.5 m away from others
• wash your hands often with soap and water
• avoid crowds
