Florida Governor Ron DeSantis officially entered the 2024 presidential race.
DeSantis, 44, submitted a document to the Federal Election Commission announcing his candidacy.
In a video clip he posted on his Twitter account, DeSantis said, “I am running for the presidential elections to lead the Great American Comeback.”
His long-expected candidacy changes the shape of the competition for the Republican nomination, as he is likely to be the biggest challenger to former President Donald Trump.
The candidate for the party will face President Joe Biden of the Democratic Party in the general elections that will be held in November 2024.
On Wednesday, DeSantis said he will hold a meeting with his major campaign financiers at a Miami hotel where they will immediately launch his campaign fundraising efforts.
DeSantis’ main argument for running is likely to be that he is the only Republican who can defeat Biden, who beat Trump in the 2020 election.
“We must reject the culture of loss that has afflicted our party in recent years. The time for excuses is over,” DeSantis said at an event in Iowa earlier this month.
