Florida Governor Increases Law Enforcement Presence to Control Spring Break Chaos

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has taken decisive action to maintain safety and order during the ongoing spring break period. DeSantis, accompanied by prominent officials, made the announcement at a news conference held at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Boost in State Troopers and Quick Response Team

Recognizing the need for enhanced law enforcement, Governor DeSantis vowed to deploy approximately 60 Florida State troopers to South Florida with an additional 24 joining the newly established quick response team. These reinforcements will be primarily focused on Miami Beach, but other popular spring break destinations like Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach will also receive heightened security measures.

Prioritizing Law and Order

In an effort to ensure public safety, Governor DeSantis emphasized the need for maintaining law and order across the state. This proactive approach reflects his unwillingness to wait for a state of emergency before taking decisive action. “We don’t welcome mayhem,” stressed DeSantis. “We want people to enjoy all that Florida has to offer, but we also expect them to abide by the law.”

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner supported DeSantis’ initiative and acknowledged the measures being implemented by the city to combat erratic spring break behavior and enforce the requirements put forth to rein in the festivities. Meiner confirmed that an additional 45 Florida Troopers will be patrolling the streets, serving as a daily reminder that law and order is a consistent expectation, not only during the spring break period.

New Measures to Curb Chaos

Previous spring break seasons witnessed several instances of disorderly conduct, unlawful activities, and even acts of violence. To address these concerns, a series of new measures has been put in place to impose stricter discipline and protection:

  • In the Entertainment District, parking rates in city parking garages and surface lots will be doubled to $100 for the periods of March 7–10 and March 14–17.

  • Access to city parking garages and surface lots in the Entertainment District will be restricted from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., excluding residents, access cardholders, and authorized employees.

  • The non-resident towing rate will be $516, double the regular rate.

  • Sidewalk cafés on Ocean Drive will be closed on March 8–10 and March 15–17.

  • To curb drunk driving, a DUI sobriety checkpoint will be established along the 400 block of 5 Street from 5 p.m. on March 8-9 and March 15-16.

  • Packaged liquor stores in the Entertainment District will strictly adhere to the regular 8 p.m. closing time.

Miami Beach witnessed a chaotic spring break in 2023, marred by two fatalities, 488 arrests—more than 230 of which involved felony offenses—and the seizure of over 100 firearms. These shocking and troubling incidents gained national attention and prompted the implementation of the additional preventive measures.
