Floating Solar Panels in Ocean Areas: Harnessing the Power of the Sun and Wind

The sun and wind share the ocean area

China has had a floating solar park on the lake for several years, and by 2022, 12,000 solar panels will be installed in Europe’s largest artificial lake, Alquiva, in Portugal.

Now solar cells go overboard, to wind farms – often for free, so there’s room for a whole fleet of solar panels.

The concept has been tested since 2019 by the Dutch company Oceans of Energy. 12 kilometers from the coast, the floating solar park has been expanded to 0.5 MW, and the company targets 15 MW production by 2023.

The solar raft has a flexible wave-tracking design and has weathered storms and waves up to 10 meters high so far.

Profit: The sun and wind joined the cables to land.
against: Salt air spray and foam damage solar cells.
condition: The technology is in place and the concept is being tested.
