Flight Strike in Italy: Delays, Cancellations, and Passenger Rights – September 2023

MILANO – Possible inconvenience ahead for those traveling by plane tomorrow. Cub Transport, and other grassroots union organizations, have called a 24-hour national strike for the air-airport-induced sector that will involve ground staff. The workers of the Flai transport airport handling services also joined the strike at a national level.

It is the airlines who have to warn travelers in the event of cancellation or rescheduling of flights. On its own site Ita has made available the list of canceled flights, over 30. The company has announced that it has activated an extraordinary plan to limit passenger inconvenience, by rebooking the largest possible number of travelers involved in the cancellations on the first available flights. 55% will be able to fly on the same day as the strike.

Ita’s recommendations

Ita Airways – adds in a note – “invites all travelers who have purchased a ticket for the day of the strike, to check the status of their flight before going to the airport. In the event of cancellation or modification of the time of their flight, they will be able to change the reservation without any penalty or request a refund of the ticket (only in the event that the flight has been canceled or has been delayed by more than 5 hours) within and no later than 13 September 2023”.

The reasons for the protest

The abstention from work is for the renewal of the contract which has been expected for six years. The unions dispute the proposals “for inadequate wage increases, the increase in working hours without sufficient economic adjustment, the reversal of part of the proposed increases in favor of private social security and health care institutions”. “The wage increases are inconsistent – says Cub Trasporti -. Against a contractual term of 10 years, and a wage loss in reference to the cost of living of 400 euros per month, a total of 250 euros is proposed and spread over three years. Instead of canceling the 24 incremental hours granted in the previous contract renewal, an increase in working hours to 38.5 hours per week will be formalized without any economic adjustment”. Finally “from the amount of the expected salary increases, funds will be transferred to finance category healthcare, managed by bilateral trade unions/companies which will be donated to companies in the sector, subtracting from the paycheck in favor of private companies and the working conditions at the airports have significantly worsened and there is the risk of an increase in broken hours, overtime, non-contracted availability”.
