Five years in prison for man who just stabbed someone on Amsterdam ferry

A man who stabbed a random victim on a ferry in Amsterdam last year has been sentenced to five years in prison. On the night of August 15, 2020, the 32-year-old perpetrator stabbed a man out of nowhere in his chest. The victim was seriously injured. After the stabbing incident, he jumped into the IJ and was taken out of the water.

When the perpetrator got off the ferry, he also threw a brick at a bystander who was hit on the back. He then tried to hit two officers with a brick. One of the two officers felt so threatened that he shot the man in the leg, after which they were able to arrest the man.

The perpetrator had no fixed place of residence. He has been convicted of, among other things, attempted manslaughter, assault and two threats “in a very short span of less than ten minutes”, the verdict says. The man also has to pay compensation of almost 3500 euros.

The Public Prosecution Service had demanded three years in prison and TBS, but according to the court, the perpetrator was fully accountable. Given a previous conviction for violence, a higher sentence of five years was therefore appropriate.
