Five keys to achieve success in the beginning of the practice of Law

| | Updated: 12/25/2020 22:00

When we finish the law degree, jurists are flooded with innumerable doubts: Oposito? Do I study a master’s degree? Do I get to work? It is not for less, we want to make use of what we have studied but how to start?

The law school of the Spanish university is light years away from what is the reality in the day-to-day professional practice and the labor market is not buoyant for the profession. Thus, How to survive in this situation?

Here are some tips that may have already been thought of but can still serve as guidance.

STARTING POINTS BEFORE YOU START TO PRACTICE AS A LAWYER

Before we begin with the means to our end, my advice is that we do a deep exercise of self reflection: Where would we like to go with professional practice?

What would we like to be and what would we like to achieve?

Ultimately, what is our goal?

Every professional and human project has to start by visualizing who we want to be and once the objective is set, we get the tools and the way to achieve it.

A law firm without clients is like a school without students.

Customers are not only important, they are the essence of our profession. Without clients we will not be able to exercise or put into practice our knowledge, our services.

A lawyer may be a great lawyer, or an excellent professor, but if he does not have clients, he will not be able to practice. Therefore, clients will always be our first objective for the beginning of the profession.

And to attract customers?

Here are some tips:

FIRST: THE LAW DOES NOT MAKE THE JURIST, THE JURIST MAKES THE LAW

However, We will not be able to be jurists if we have not previously studied the law thoroughly. A jurist applies the law to the fact of the client, therefore, continuous study and learning is the essence of our profession.

Not only the study and knowledge of civil, criminal or procedural codes, that is the minimum, but also the reading of the commented texts, latest sentences and jurisprudence, legislative reforms, and of course, specialized magazines or digital legal newspapers, which summarize legal news.

The client who comes to use our services, will know his case perfectly and will wait for a practical solution from the lawyer.

SECOND: THE PERSONAL BRAND

Law is a profession that focuses on services, in the solution to the client’s legal problem.

Can there be any profession where the brand, what we generate as professionals, is so important?

We have to constantly work on our personal and professional image, with a legal background and with a commercial form to try to produce in the client the perception that our solution is the one they need.

THIRD: IF YOU ARE NOT, YOU DO NOT EXIST. WEB, BLOG, SOCIAL NETWORKS …

We live in a world where communication constantly floods us, where yesterday’s information is history today and where today’s knowledge will be tomorrow’s news. Therefore, we have to be, generate opinion and, most importantly, to influence in the best way possible on those we want to influence: customers.

FOURTH: THE OFFICE WILL BE YOUR OPERATIONS CENTER

Following the tips above, our office will be part of the compendium of elements that we want to develop as our “brand”.

Can we imagine a doctor operating in the waiting room?

The legal profession touches very sensitive elements of our clients, therefore, we must take care of the details, appointments, meetings, and of course, their meeting place.

FIFTH: THE USUAL IS FORGOTTEN, THE EXCELLENT LASTS

Do we still remember that dish we ordered in the restaurant where we went to celebrate that special moment? Do we remember that perfume or that cordial treatment we received when we went to the doctor?

Small details make the difference And if we want to succeed in a changing world, where competition is stifling, we will only survive if we are able to be unique.

Therefore, my last advice is the constant search for excellence.

Delivering: Let’s set a goal and define the route to achieve it.

Once the end has been focused, let’s put the means to achieve it, let’s work on continuous training, our personal brand and let’s be unique, since only in this way can we reach the final step, which is excellence.

As i said John F. Kennedy: “We do not all have the same talent, but we do have the same opportunities to develop our talents”.
