First US State Bans Treatment of Young Transgender People | NOW

Arkansas was the first state in the United States to ban hormone treatments or surgeries on Tuesday for minors who don’t identify with their gender. Critics speak of the latest example of the conservative offensive in the United States against transgender people.

If doctors still cooperate in the treatment of young transgender people, they could lose their license. They can also be held financially liable afterwards if patients regret their choice.

Arkansas governor recently vetoed the law. He thought it was too much interference from the authorities. But a majority of parliament in the Christian and conservative southern state decided to reject the governor’s objection.

Civil rights movement ACLU denounces the move and talks about a discriminatory crusade against transgender youth. Arkansas’s elected representatives ignored mass opposition to this bill, a spokesman said.

At least 16 other US states are considering similar legislation.
